Platt Thanks All For Successful Appeal & Event

The building committee’s recent annual appeal has been a great success. We thank all of you who generously make us a part of your annual giving and we are delighted that so many new folks have joined our list of supporters. In a recent meeting we set priorities for the upcoming year. They are to:

1. identify and secure financial commitments from major donors in our area,
2. explore all options for grant funding, and
3. continue to host a variety of community events aimed at both fund raising and “fun-raising.”

Our most recent community event called “Broadway, Bubbles and Bon Bons” was held on Sunday, February 4. Guests were treated to a lovely afternoon of outstanding music performed by Broadway vocalist Bill Carmichael, and accompanied by pianist Chuck Miller and bassist Andy Smith. The concert of jazz and Broadway tunes held in the comfort and intimacy of the Shoreham Inn was made especially enjoyable by the abundance of chocolate desserts and bubbly Champagne. We’d like to extend special thanks not only to the musicians, but to Molly and Dominic, Chris Murphy, Shannon Bohler-Small and Champlain Chocolates who all helped to bringing this event to life.

Please help support the Platt Memorial Library’s expansion and renovation efforts by attending our bake sale to be held in conjunction with the annual book sale and our second annual plant sale, both to be held later this spring. Anyone interested in helping with the building project should stop by the library and talk with Renee or Brie.

We are getting ready for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by re-reading the series and watching the movies together. Pick up a copy of the book at the Library to read for the discussions, then enjoy the movies!

It’s Bluegrass for Newton Academy

The Newton Academy Restoration Committee is continuing its efforts to raise money for the repair and restoration of Newton Academy, the old Shoreham High School. The next events will include bluegrass music, refreshments and an art raffle.

Big Spike Bluegrass will perform at the Shoreham Elementary School on Saturday March 24th at 7:30 p.m. Bill Gaston on banjo, Kirk Lord on bass, Pete Langdell on guitar, Freeman Corey, Jr. (home-grown in Benson) on fiddle and Neil Rossi on Mandolin will keep your toes tapping. Big Spike feels that it’s not enough to just do their signature close harmony and impressive instrumental work to keep an audience interested. They feel strongly that it’s important to bring a sense of humor and enthusiasm to their music. As mandolinist Rossi says, “With as much practicing as we do, we still never think of this as work when we get up on stage. We’re having too much fun up there.”

Not to be outdone, Snake Mountain Bluegrass will perform at the Shoreham Elementary School on Friday April 20th at 7:30 p.m. You’ll recognize the familiar faces of Mike Connor (Shoreham) on banjo, Gregg Humphrey on guitar, Mike Boise on bass and Earle Provin on mandolin, guitar and national steel guitar. The great harmonies, old favorites, original tunes and the flying fingers of this band will keep you glued to your spot and begging for more. The fun begins the moment they step on stage and by the end of the performance the audience will wish the evening didn’t have to end.

Both Big Spike Bluegrass and Snake Mountain Bluegrass perform locally and regionally at clubs and festivals. The Newton Academy Restoration Committee is pleased to be able to present this level of entertainment to our community as a sample of the kinds of events we can hope to sponsor at Newton Academy in the future.

The doors will open at 7:00 p.m. on concert nights. Ticket prices are $10.00 each for adults and $6.00 each for students of all ages. Raffle tickets will be on sale for the art auction starting on March 24th. The raffle prizes which include a Reed Prescott, III print, a Doris Brisson painting and several original nature scene oil paintings, ready for framing, will be on exhibit. Shoreham hats, T-shirts and Newton Academy T-shirts will also be available for sale.

Public Forum for Newton Academy

February 21, 7PM—The Newton Academy Restoration Committee will hold a forum at the Elementary School to discuss plans for future uses for the Academy building. They will have conceptual drawings for viewing, as well. If you have thoughts or feelings about the future of Newton Academy, here’s a good place to let them be known.

Registering to Vote at Town Meeting

In order to vote at Town Meeting, March 5, or the March 6 Australian Balloting, you must register to vote by NOON, Monday, February 26, 2007.

You may register to vote by going to the Town Clerk’s Office, or calling the Office at 897-5841, to request a voter registration form. You may also register to vote when you apply for or renew a driver’s license through the Dept. of Motor Vehicles. In addition, voter registration is available through the Dept. of Social Welfare, the Dept. of Health and the Dept. of Aging & Disabilities and Dept. of Mental Health.

If you are registering to vote for the first time in Vermont, you will need to provide a valid photo ID (Driver’s License or Passport), a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement or another government document that shows your current name and address.

If you have questions about getting on the checklist, call the Town Clerk.

The Legal Voters of the Town of Shoreham, Vermont are hereby warned and notified to meet at the School Auditorium in said Shoreham, Vermont on Monday the 5th of March, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. to transact all business not involving voting by Australian Ballot. (Said balloting to be held Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. in the afternoon at the Donald Treadway Fire House).

Article 1: To elect all necessary Town and Town School Officers as required by Law. (By Australian Ballot)

Article 5: Shall the Town pay its Real Estate Property Taxes to the Treasurer on November 10, 2007 with delinquent taxes having a penalty charge of eight per cent, and interest charges of not more than one percent per month or fraction thereof for the first three months and thereafter one and one-half per cent per month or fraction thereof, and interest of one and one-half per cent per month or fraction also applying to prior year delinquencies.

Article 6: Shall the voters of the Town of Shoreham authorize the Selectboard to accept and spend unanticipated funds? (Such as grants and gifts)

Article 7: Shall the voters of the Town of Shoreham authorize the Selectboard to add an amount of money, not to exceed a penny, to the tax rate to be put into the reserve fund for the Purchase of Fire and Rescue Equipment?

Article 8: Shall the voters of the Town of Shoreham authorize the Selectboard to put $8,849.00 of the General Fund balance into the reserve fund for Newton Academy?

Article 9: Shall the voters of the Town of Shoreham authorize the Selectboard to proceed with planning for the Town Clerk’s Office and spend an amount not to exceed $5,000 to be taken from Town Clerk’s Office Reserve Fund?

Article 10: Shall the voters of the Town of Shoreham authorize the Selectboard to put $10,000 of the General Fund Balance into the reserve fund for the Town Clerk’s Office?

Article 11: Shall the voters of the Town of Shoreham vote on monetary questions by Australian Ballot?

Bubbles, Broadway, & Bon Bons!—A benefit event for the Library Building Fund

On Sunday, February 4, the Shoreham Inn is hosting a benefit for the Platt Memorial Library Building Fund. Join us from 4 to 6PM for champagne, a chocolate buffet, and a great selection of Broadway music presented by Bill Carmichael Walsh with Chuck Miller and Andy Smith, all for just $20!

Bill Carmichael Walsh has appeared in a number of Broadway and New York productions including Les Misérables, Cats, Peter Pan, Forbidden Broadway (original cast), La Bohème, and Mamma Mia!. Los Angeles and national tours include Ragtime (USA premiere), City of Angels, Sweeney Todd, Forever Plaid and Phantom of the Opera. Most recently, he performed in A Christmas Carol at the Boston’s North Shore Music Theatre. Bill and his wife, Sue, own and operate the Emerson Guest House in Vergennnes.
